The short answer to the question "Can I have an internship with you?" is: I do NOT take summer interns, but there are few exceptions (see below). The long answer, which I hope helps understand my reasons why you might not get an answer from me is the following. 1) Since I started as a professor I received dozens of emails from students from different countries in the world asking for an internship in my group. Although that is edifying and flattering, most of the emails are copy-paste without a proper connection with my research area. I do understand the reasons that most students try to send thousands of emails to get at least one chance, but this is not the proper way to do that, and it is not you usually a good way to attract the attention of people. So, for such students, there will be no answer on my side because if you don't invest time on me I don't invest time on you. 2) The process of getting an intern is cumbersome and expensive, especially for non-EU countries and, if I undergo such process, I want to be sure that I invest time and money for excellent students which are considering applying to Aarhus for a Ph.D. I don't provide an internship as a mean of experience to yield a recommendation letter, I'm again sorry. 3) You have the best shot if you have a Bachelor Degree. In that case, I can screen you and invite you here for a 3 months period to apply for a Ph.D. here. However, you first need to convince me that you are considering Aarhus University for your graduate studies and you can take a Ph.D. with me. So, here is the solution to the impasse: - Are you an undergrad student? Then apply for an internship if at least one of the following applies 1. You have excellent or outstanding grades and studies compatible with my area of research 2. You have an interesting project idea which is close to one of my current research areas (remember, my area is graph analytics and mining, I don't do pure machine learning, so NLP, Deep Learning and similar are out of the context) - Browse my website and SEND ME a short high-level proposal on what you would like to work on. 3. You have very good grades and EITHER a) you have already done some research project (even better, culminating with a publication) in this area OR b) You are willing to have REMOTE supervision for your bachelor thesis in the area of graph analytics - No on-site internship is provided, though. - Do you have a bachelor degree? Then send me your CV and your intention for a Ph.D. or a screening internship for three months. Attach a research proposal on what you think you could work on. This condition applies again to an excellent student. --- February 20, 2019 Davide Mottin
